River Country, the first and smallest of Disney's water parks, was opened in the mid seventies. This water park, complete with a red-rock mountain surrounded by maple and pine trees, is rustic and rugged. The visitor can enjoy excellent nature trails and one of the few beaches in Central Florida. River Country is located near the Fort Wilderness resort and draws it's water supply from Bay Lake with the use of an innovative pump and filtration system located inside an artificial mountain. It then distributes the water at a rate of about 8,500 gallons per minute before returning the excess water to the lake.
